       The expected implementation from Jan 1^st 2013 of the revised Marpol Annex V , adopted by IMO as Resolution MEPC.201(62), will have a number of operational consequences because ship generated waste materials that today may be disposed of at sea,  such as paper & cardboard,  glass etc  (all ground or un‐ground)  but also materials that float such as lining and packing materials etc.   will  have to be kept onboard for  subsequent recycling or disposal ashore .

       In this respect ships will be forced to either find additional storage space for garbage or are required to reduce the garbage volume for onboard storage if available space is limited.

Light Structures AS is established   in 2001 by scientists from the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment and is providing  Fiber Optic  Structure Condition Monitoring Systems.  Their principal office and manufacturing facility is located in Oslo, Norway.  

The purpose of Structure Condition Monitoring Systems is to reduce the risk of structural failures, spill to the sea, damage to cargo and reduction of maintenance costs.  By continuously monitoring and analyzing stresses the  monitoring system can guide crew in crucial decision-making  by providing  alarms  when stresses exceed safe limits.  At the same time the system benefits ship owners by providing accurate information on the ship's operation and corresponding fatigue accumulation.

Light Structure Monitoring System is based on the use of Fiber Optics with short base sensor , without  zenner Barrier and without Anti - vibration mounts resulting a system which does not require an annual or biannual calibration .

Production range includes:

• Hull Stress Monitoring   system.  It continuously monitoring and analyzing stresses, the hull stress monitoring system can guide crew in crucial decision-making and provide alarms when stresses   exceed safe limits.
• Sloshing monitoring system for LNG tanks.  Monitors the pressure and force exerted by liquid cargo sloshing inside cargo tank.  Is Qualified for very low temperatures (-165 °C). Provides information about condition of hard inspect parts of the containment system.
• Ice load monitoring system. Continuous monitoring of hull response to sea-ice pressure on bow structure
